Visual Art all school teacher
Mrs. Hinds considers herself as a life-long learner, a creative artist and a teacher by heart. She strongly believes in the power and importance of the arts in all children’s educational journey. Mrs. Hinds was born in Germany, Berlin, in 1954. After studying Art and Photography at the Academy of Graphic Arts in Leipzig, Germany, she has been working as a photo-editor at a daily newspaper and as a freelanced photographer and visual artist. As a photographer she traveled to many countries in the world and in 1993 she moved to Barbados. Through her daughter, a child with learning difficulties, she became interested and involved in education; she taught art courses to children and organized and implemented many art camps. She was running an art gallery in Barbados (Baystreet, “Perseverance House of Art”), where some of her art courses and camps took place. She then attended the Barbados Erdiston Teacher Training College and holds a college degree as a special needs teacher. Mrs. Hinds has exhibited her art work at various places in Barbados and created many large Sensory Boards (large 3 dimensional pictures for children to touch and explore) which are now used in Occupational Therapy at the Barbados Children’s Development Centre. In 2002 these Sensory Boards were also exhibited at the World Congress & Exposition on Disabilities in Orlando, Florida. Since Codrington School was reopened, in September 2002, Mrs. Hinds works as the art teacher for all students at the school. In previous years she has also worked as the form teacher of reception class, as the Social Studies teacher for all grades and as the homeroom teacher for a Middle Years class, teaching Geography and History. Over the years Mrs. Hinds attended various IBO teacher training sessions, in-house PYP courses at Codrington School and in July 2007 a MYP (Visual Arts) course in Vancouver.
Achievements Mrs. Hinds is the author of the book “Picture Science”, published at Redleaf Press, USA, (on the topic of how to use digital photography in teaching/learning). In 2007 her book was awarded with the Director’s Choice/ Early Childhood News Award. Between 2002 and 2008 Codrington School’s visual art students participated in all annual Barbados NIFCA Fine Arts competitions and were always chosen to be in the finals. Codrington school’s art department can now proudly look back to have achieved the following awards: 6 Bronze Medals, 2 Silver Medals, 1 Gold Medal, a Special Award from UNICEF, and 1 Incentive Award for Fine Art.
