Humanities assessment criteria

Level 0

The student does not reach a standard described by any of the descriptors given below.

Level 1-2

Incorrect use of terms. Does not provide examples. Inaccurate descriptions, insufficient detail and superficial explanations.

May demonstrate some awareness of the connections between subject matter and Humanities concepts (time, place and space, change, systems and global awareness.)

Some relevant information. Minimal analytical skills. Arguments are not always relevant. Little skill when carrying out investigations.

Structure unclear and/or inappropriate. Presentation and expression unclear and imprecise. Some evidence of documentation.

Level 3-4

Mostly accurate use of terms. Facts and examples are mostly relevant and usually show understanding. Sufficient descriptions and detail but explanations sometimes superficial.

Demonstrates awareness and understanding by describing basic connections between subject matter and concepts.

Mostly relevant information. Lack of required depth in analysis. Some relevant but unsupported arguments. Basic investigation skills.

Structure and sequence not always successful. Presentation and expression occasionally unclear. Sources are documented but several omissions or errors.

Level 5-6

Accurate use of terms. Relevant facts and examples which show understanding. Accurate descriptions and adequate explanations.

Demonstrates awareness and understanding by describing connections between subject matter and concepts and attempting to apply concepts to other situations.

Relevant information. Satisfactory evidence in analysis. Arguments are supported and balanced, but superficial. Adequate investigation skills.

Structure and sequence appropriate but not always logical. Clear presentation and expression. Sources documented but with occasional errors. Attention is paid to the audience and purpose in terms of language, style and visuals.

Level 7-8

Accurate use of a range of terms. Relevant facts and examples. Accurate and detailed descriptions with developed explanations.

Demonstrates conceptual awareness and understanding by explaining connections and applying concepts to other situations.

A range of relevant information. Good level of critical analysis. Arguments are well supported and balanced. Effective investigation skills.

Structure and sequence well developed and logical. Expression clear, concise and effective. Sources documented according to a recognized convention. Language, style and visuals always appropriate to the audience.

Level 9-10

Excellent command of a wide range of terms. Extensive range of relevant facts and examples. Sophisticated descriptions and fully- developed explanations.

Demonstrates conceptual awareness and understanding by explaining in detail connections and applying concepts effectively to other situations.

Wide range of relevant information. High level of critical analysis. Arguments are fully supported and well balanced. Sophisticated investigation skills.
