Enrichment activities

The school offers a rich mix of enrichment activities. Children may choose to take one of these activities each day, Monday through Thursday. We trust that these activities, which are normally scheduled between 3.00pm and 4.00pm, will help to enhance your child’s education.

Afro - Caribbean Dance

Instructor(s): Ms. Toni Thorne

Toni Thorne is a 24 year old award-winning young entrepreneur and National Youth Awardee. She has been a founding member of Dancin Africa and one of the lead dancers in The Dance Place under the tutelage of Mrs. Elizabeth Bayley, Mrs. Ramsay and Mrs. Adonia Evelyn. Whilst at the Dance Place, she was exposed to tap, ballet and jazz. She was also a recipient of the prestigious Junior Cup Trophy. She also received numerous distinctions under the Royal Academy of Dance examinations.

Ms. Thorne is the founder and Managing Director of Settlers West Coast Experience. SWCE is Barbados’ first all inclusive travelling midnight carnival. It was established in 2011 in an effort to fill the void left by the Congaline festival during the tourist season. Within months, the Government of Barbados has endorsed this business and formed a strategic alliance with SWCE- placing it on the official Crop Over Calendar for 2012.

Basic and intermediate African dance and folk concepts such as movement techniques and attire.

  • Caribbean folk songs and dance
  • African costuming and make up
  • Students will have the opportunity to conceptualize their costumes and props from a readily available costume stock of Dancin’ Africa

ArtSplash is FUN!

Basketball

Instructor(s): James Weekes

My (quite flexible) arm has managed to bend this year and I will be leading a Basketball enrichment for the first time since coming to Codrington in 2011 as a teacher for the PYP. Before coming to TCS, I spent three years coaching basketball to boys and girls at an IB school in Germany. From my U12s, to varsity, I had great fun and success in coaching this sport.

My one insistence on leading this enrichment is that any players I coach, will get to experience an actual game, even just friendlies. Offering this to such a diverse age range (MYP 1 - MYP 5) means that the skills we work on will be differentiated just like in a classroom. Not only is this a game for the individual to grow exponentially in ball handling, shooting skills, and positioning, but it is a game that will only see success through dedication and team-work. Through this enrichment, players will get to know the game theoretically as well as practically and have fun doing so, come rain or shine. Coach (Mr.) James.

Bow Bender Archery

Instructor(s): Mr Robert Hurley and Mr Michael Gooding

Mr Hurley is the President of the BowBenders Archery Club and a Barbados National Archery Judge. Mr Michael Gooding is the 2010 and the 2011 Barbados Outdoor National Masters Champion. Mr Richard Gooding is the 2011 Barbados Indoor and Outdoor National Junior Champion.

This activity will take place at the Kendal Sporting Club. The course will cover bow types and construction, the history of the bow and archer, and ancillary equipment and of course, shooting.

Instructors Jason Greene and Delroy Jones are high level students and passionate instructors of Axe Capoeira Barbados, their unique teaching styles have been instrumental in the success of the group's many programs.

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art which combines elements from various disciplines including martial arts, acrobatics, music and dance into a stunning display of athletic skills and bodily control. With its emphasis on "play" and evasion in dealing with confrontations, the Capoeira practitioner develops flexibility and agility of mind and body allowing him or her to be more creative in dealing with life's day to day challenges.
